Rounding cents go to the largest fractional remainders, with person order breaking ties. Utilities reconcile separately.

Choose the agreement, then check the math

Equal splitting uses one share per person. Income splitting uses each person’s income divided by the combined income. Room-size splitting uses each person’s allocated private area, with an optional equal portion for common spaces. Custom percentages represent the agreement you have already made; the calculator does not decide which agreement is fair.

Person’s rent = total rent × person’s weight ÷ sum of weights

For example, incomes of 3,000 and 2,000 allocate 60% and 40% of a 2,000 rent: 1,200 and 800. A separate 100 utility bill split equally adds 50 each, giving totals of 1,250 and 850.

In room mode, a 30% common-area allocation means 30% of rent is split equally and 70% follows private area. This is a chosen cost allocation, not a measurement of the building’s common floor space. Bathrooms, parking and noise do not receive automatic premiums; use custom shares if the household wants to price them.

This is an arithmetic planning tool, not lease or legal advice. It does not change anyone’s responsibility to a landlord or utility provider. It does not allocate deposits, partial months or arrears.

Method references: Omni’s area-based rent division and Splitwise’s room-feature approach. These illustrate different allocation choices; no method is a universal fairness rule.

About This Calculator

Split rent by person, income, room size or custom percentages. Allocate utilities separately and reconcile every share to the full monthly rent and bills.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does income-based rent splitting work?

Each person pays rent in proportion to their share of combined income. For incomes of 3,000 and 2,000, the shares are 60% and 40%. Everyone must agree to the chosen method.

What if two people share a bedroom?

In room-size mode, divide the private room area between its occupants and enter each person’s allocated area. The optional common-area portion and equal utilities are split per person.

Will all the shares add back to the total?

Yes. Rent and utilities are allocated in cents separately. Remaining cents go to the largest fractional remainders, with person order breaking ties.
